Just write what’s in your heart. Whatever you write, there is a genre for it, don’t worry. Don’t write for the type of book, write a book and the type will take care of itself. If it’s good, people will read it. That’s all you need to know. Read many books too, so you can get an understanding of the flow of words. Word have to sound right, as well the story being worth reading. Reading will help you find your voice.
pj m is right about the different types of genres and how u should start off when u write your short stories do what i used to do find something you like to do or something you do all the time and describe it in detail for me i described what it was like coming to school in the morning and i got a good grade on my assignment because i used metaphors to describe it this will help make you a very good descriptive Writer it might take a while to describe everything but it will make you a better Writer

There are non-fiction, fiction, self-help, autobiographies, biographies, science fiction, horror, mystery/suspense. A novel is a book with more than 40,000 words at best. It can be non-fiction or fiction. Science fiction, horror, mystery & suspense are actually what is called a genre.
First you have to write your book. You have to make sure you have no errors of any kind that would aid in a literary agent or publisher from rejecting your work. Try writing short stories first. This will give you an idea of how to put your thoughts together in writing.
