What Are Good Books To Read If You Are Considering Vegetarianism?

My fiance and I are thinking about going vegetarian and want to give it some thought over the summer in between classses. It seems there are three kinds of motives for vegetarianism: animal rights, social justice (agrobusiness is evil), and personal health. We were looking to find approximately three good books, either fitting with these categories or not. Any suggestions?

Well, although its not a book, I always suggest Alec Baldwin’s 14-minute documentary Meet Your Meat. It is now uploaded on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIjanhKqVC4

    Enjoy!

    Hmmm….
Cooking with Cows, that was a great book, learned how to make the most mouthwatering steak with blue cheese.
Cooking with Chickens, that one was a tear jerk-er, for when the the rosemary and chicken met, it was love at first sight.
Cooking with Pigs, this was a pure drama, when that bacon hit the skillet it really made you think of the true flavors.
Fish for food, this was a comical adventure of the filet’o fish that just wanted to be loved in tarter sauce.

Your not going to save any money the more veggies you eat the price of meat is cheaper per pound.
as for books any library has most all.
but God didn’t make you that way
Just freaky Puritans and religious zealots.
You live in a free country.
Your allowed to be as stupid as you wish.
Just don’t make laws to stop me enjoying prime rib
    or my Jim Boy’s taco’s.
and of course YOU know I just don’t care.

Read Diet For A Small Planet by Francis Ford Lappe and Diet For A New America by John Robbins.
Both are compelling reads and eye opening.
While you may not become a vegetarian after reading these books you will look at supermarket meat and that industry in a whole new way. These books, especially the one by Robbins, changed my family’s way of viewing meat and eating. This book made the rounds through my extended family shortly after it came out in the late ’80s and has stuck with us – new generations are also reading it and making their own choices.
My son,who is a high school senior, has read both books and they made a profound impact on him – heis heading to an agriculture college in the fall in order to study organic farming.

The New Ethics of Eating is a good book with useful information concerning both animal issues and human health. It explains in detail and yet in a simple way, why refusing to support the meat industry is a great choice for both you and animals. It’s a must read for any vegetarian or vegan. I pasted a link where you can download it for free.

Meat Market – by Erik Marcus – good one for explaining about evil agribusiness.
Diet for a New America – John Robbins – this is the book that I read 14 years ago that convinced me to become vegetarian.
Vegan Freak (being vegan in a non-vegan world) Bob and Jennas Torres – you should check out veganism too! This book helps with explaining your new diet in different social sitiuations (among other things)
The China Study – T. Colin Campbell – compelling evidence that chosing a vegan diet is the most healthful.
Becoming Vegan – Brenda Davis/Vesanto Melina – great hands on guide to explain how and what to eat to be healthier than you have ever been!!
There are tons of resources online too.
Good luck and have fun reading!
